Indonesia–Russia Strategic Partnership in a Changing Energy Landscape: Prospects and Challenges
Indo-Pacific Strategic Intelligence (ISI) and the Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies (CCEIS), HSE University, convened a webinar on 21 September 2026 to discuss Indonesia–Russia strategic partnership amid a changing global energy landscape. Bringing together perspectives from Indonesia and Russia, the webinar explored the prospects for civil nuclear energy cooperation, including suitable technologies, regulatory and safety considerations, human capital development, and opportunities for industrial cooperation.
The discussion also highlighted the importance of aligning nuclear energy development with Indonesia’s specific energy needs, geographical conditions, and long-term capacity development. Particular attention was given to potential cooperation in small modular reactors (SMRs), floating nuclear power plants (FNPPs), research and workforce development, and the gradual localization of nuclear capabilities.
